How long can you stay on SPRAVATO®?

Living with depression that has not improved despite therapy and medication can leave you feeling stuck and discouraged. When standard treatments stop working, you deserve options that are backed by real science and tailored to how you actually respond, not a one-size-fits-all approach that leaves you waiting for change that never quite arrives.

SPRAVATO® is not like the antidepressants you may have tried before, and it is completely normal to have questions about how it works and what your treatment will look like over time. A common question is, “How long can you stay on SPRAVATO®?”, and Dr. Srisai Gowda is happy to walk you through what a realistic, personalized timeline looks like.

How SPRAVATO® Works

SPRAVATO® (esketamine) works differently from traditional antidepressants because it targets a separate pathway in the brain that is linked to mood regulation. Rather than waiting weeks for a gradual buildup, many patients notice meaningful changes much sooner. You will receive each dose in one of our private or shared treatment rooms at our Linwood office, based on your preference, and you will be monitored for at least two hours afterward to ensure your safety and comfort.

Your treatment will generally follow two phases. During the first four weeks, called the induction phase, you will come in twice a week for your sessions. After that, your visits typically move to once a week for about a month, and then to once every one or two weeks depending on how you are responding. Dr. Gowda and his team will walk you through this schedule at your first appointment, so when you ask how long you can remain on SPRAVATO®, you will already have a clear picture of what comes next.

Is There A Limit To How Long You Can Use SPRAVATO®?

There is no strict cutoff that determines how long you can stay on SPRAVATO®. Your treatment length is based on your personal response, your symptom relief, and how well you tolerate the sessions as they space out over time. Some patients continue on a maintenance schedule for several months, while others remain on a longer, wholesome course of care to help protect the progress they have achieved and support lasting remission.

Long term studies following patients for multiple years have shown that SPRAVATO® can remain safe and effective well beyond the initial induction and maintenance phases. Dr. Gowda takes an integrated approach, regularly reviewing your progress and adjusting your plan so your care stays aligned with your goals. Whether you and Dr. Gowda decide together to continue treatment, space out your sessions further, or eventually taper off, the decision will always be guided by what helps you achieve remission and feel like yourself again.
